Cracks usually occur
at the rear of the wheel where the most flex
is. When a wheel is cracked, it is also
probably bent. Most wheels are made of a
356A aluminum alloy. To weld this you need a
TIG (tungsten inert gas) welder. Some shops
repair cracks by doing a surface weld. This
is where you clean the cracked area and then
weld over the crack on both sides. It gives
the appearance of a proper repair but this
technique usually fails later and the shops
offer no warranty. This leaves you stuck
paying again. At Wheel Worx we
take the time to do the repair in a fashion
that lasts. We cut the crack wider and
farther extending beyond any stress areas.
Then we weld from both sides. This not only
fuses the weld to the parent metal it also
goes through the crack and bonds to the weld
on the other side. The weld, if you were
looking at a cross section, would resemble
an I-beam. This is a very strong repair.
This style of repair takes longer but has
few failures. |
